Word Of The Week: Grace
Grace has many meanings in the New Testament, but it primarily relates to God’s offering of salvation to us. Sinners who believe in Jesus are “justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus” (Rom. 3:24). “By grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God” (Eph. 2:8).
What does this mean? As violators of His divine law God had every right to destroy us forever, for this is the penalty against sin. But out of His goodness and love -- His grace -- God provided a way for us to be saved from our sins that we did not deserve.
We did not think up the plan; we did not bring something of value to pay for our sins. God paid for them with the life of His Son.
Misunderstanding grace leads some to take advantage of God. Grace does not free us to do as we like. We remain under obligation to obey God, but our faith and love respond to God’s grace with humble submission and service.
