The Death of Common Sense
Common sense is a valuable commodity. But what is it, exactly? Briefly, there are practical, sensible ways of achieving objectives which are learned through observation and experience. The opposite would be choices that are “nonsense” because they are disconnected from reality and thus fail to accomplish what is intended. Thus violating the basic principles of action/reaction, the lack of common sense can be more an annoying; it can be destructive and dangerous.
We observe lapses of common sense while driving: a motorcycle zooming past us at 100+ mph; a car that cuts across three lanes at the last minute to take an exit; texting drivers, etc.
But such relatively minor displays of foolishness can occur on a national scale. For example, King Amaziah decisively defeated the Edomites and then inexplicably brought their idols to Jerusalem and worshiped them (2 Chr 25:14). “Therefore the anger of the Lord was aroused against Amaziah … ‘Why have you sought the gods of the people which could not rescue their own people from your hand?’” (25:15). Roughly translated: “How could you be so stupid?” Sadly, human foolishness knows no bounds.
Note: One of God’s judgments against those who reject Him is to remove their wisdom. God warns Jerusalem “the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hidden” (Is 29:14). Honoring God not only educates us via direct revelation – Scripture – but also enables us to observe our surroundings and make rational decisions, for this world was made and is governed by a rational God. Rejecting God and His truths guarantees a lack of common sense.
