The Shifting Sands of Worldly Values
Today it is acceptable; tomorrow it is an egregious error for which the offender must be punished. What was once a harmless expression is now an insult. Refer to a special-interest group member with the wrong terminology? Bigot! Compliment a woman’s appearance? Sexist! Any critical remark about anyone, anytime, anywhere, about anything – judgmental!
Yes, cultural norms change and everyone makes adjustments to some degree. But what is happening in our society has a dark side born of moral confusion that seeks dominance by altering our values and attitudes.
One of the many blessings in being a child of God is the clarity, wisdom and security of the fixed values emanating from His revealed will. While the world wanders aimlessly in search of truth and meaning, God has graciously given us the guidance we so desperately need: “You, through Your commandments, make me wiser than my enemies; for they are ever with me. I have more understanding than all my teachers, for Your testimonies are my meditation. I understand more than the ancients, because I keep Your precepts. I have restrained my feet from every evil way, that I may keep Your word” (Ps 119:97-101).
Many unbelievers think God is a tyrant, but man actually owns that title. No one is so overbearing as the evil man promoting his evil. We are seeing the rapid expansion of tyranny as unbelievers come up empty in their search for what is real. Consequently, they take out their frustrations on those who are secure in their beliefs and self-knowledge. Thank God for truth that lights our pathway!
