Dial 9-1-1

I recently read that any cellphone can be used to dial 9-1-1.  The phone does not have to be connected to a network; any cell phone, so long as it is charged, can access the emergency number.  Some of you tech-savvy people probably knew that already, but yes, I am a dinosaur.

This seems to be a humanitarian gesture that doesn’t profit anyone financially.  It recognizes the reality that anyone of us can fall into a dangerous, potentially tragic situation at any moment via illness, accident, threat of violence, or other misfortune.

But God thought of unlimited access first.  One of His greatest blessings to mankind is 24/7 access through prayer.  We can come to Him in the dead of night, when darkness not only obscures our sight but hangs heavy on our hearts.  We can speak to Him in a roomful of people without anyone knowing – unlike those who publicly spew TMI on their cellphones.  There is not a time, circumstance or need where we may call out to God and get no answer or are directed to voicemail.

But here’s the really great thing:  God doesn’t give us this access in emergencies only.  We can express our thoughts to God at any time.  Actually, there is a catch here:  if we don’t regularly converse with God, we may feel too guilty to turn to Him in a crisis.  Prayer is not a duty or a burden; it is a wonderful opportunity of fellowship with our Creator, and it reinforces the principle that life without Him loses its meaning and clarity.
