How Jesus Was Misunderstood (4)

“We have heard from the law that the Christ remains forever; and how can You say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up’? Who is this Son of Man? (John 12:34)

Sometimes people have been misinformed as to what the Bible actually says.  Some religious teacher may have misguided them, or perhaps they’ve just absorbed an “urban legend.”  For example, have you heard someone say, “I thought Jesus went to hell when He died.”  That is a misunderstanding of Acts 2:27 based on the old King James Version.  (The proper translation is “hades,” not “hell.”).

Jesus was not only rejected by carnal minds; He also met resistance from those who did not really know Old Testament Scripture.  In the above verse, the people were expecting the Messiah to be a permanent fixture on the earth, which confused them when He spoke of His coming death.  “We preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block …” (1 Cor 1:23).

In our day especially, we are bombarded with information – not all of it accurate or helpful.  When it comes to the Bible, we should take nothing for granted.  Let us emulate the Bereans who “searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so” (Acts 17:11).
