1 Kings 20:11

Let not the one who puts on his armor boast like the one who takes it off. (1 Kings 20:11)

In spite of the fact that this little nugget of advice is offered by an ungodly king, Ahab, there is a lot of wisdom in it.  The axiom addresses the folly of overconfidence.

When we are absolutely sure of a thing, as Ben-Hadad was in his threat to annihilate Samaria, we are focusing only on our own potential.  Very rarely does raw potential achieve the outcome we desire, for there are so many variables in life that interfere with our plans.

A moment’s reflection shows that the best team doesn’t always win, the fastest car doesn’t always take the checkered flag, the smartest student doesn’t always get the best job.  Depending on our own talents is folly.

This is why we are instructed to seek God’s will in the things we intend (Js 4:15).  Whatever outcome God wills is guaranteed, for nothing can derail it.  So, if I align my will with God’s, then victory is mine no matter what.
