Romans 12:16
Do not be wise in your own opinion. (Romans 12:16)
This verse requires a bit of study to see clearly what it does and doesn’t say. First, the context should be noted. The beginning part of the verse says: “Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble …”. This is a clue that the phrase in question is stressing humility and respect for the thoughts of others.
Second, check other translations: “Do not be conceited” (NIV); “Never be wise in your own sight” (ESV); “Don’t become set in your own opinions” (Phillips). Phillips translates the first part of the verse: “Live in harmony with each other. Don’t become snobbish but take a real interest in ordinary people.”
The verse does not seem to be a blanket condemnation of thinking one can make good decisions. Indeed, every day presents us with a thousand choices. Let us hope we all are developing a measure of sound judgment. Rather, Paul is highlighting an attitude of superiority that will not listen to or learn from others. “One afflicted with such pride has contempt for the lowly; he feels himself suited to high place, honor and people” (L.A. Mott). A small measure of this humility might have enabled the Jewish leaders to see Jesus for who He truly was.
