1 Kings 3:24-25

"And the king said, 'Get me a sword.' So they brought a sword before the king. And the king said, 'Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one and half to the other." (1 Kings 3:24-25)

Solomon ascended to the throne after the death of his father David. To help Solomon shepherd Israel, God granted him a wish. Solomon could have chosen anything. He chose wisdom, and our verses today reveal the depth of that wisdom.

Two prostitutes who lived together bore children only days apart. One rolled on her child in the night and killed him. She then stole the other’s child and claimed him as her own.

Since there were no paternity tests, Solomon had to rectify the issue without the help of DNA. He exercised his wisdom in a profound way by commanding the child to be cut in half and divided between the two women. The true mother exercised her motherly instinct to save the baby’s life and was vindicated.

This story reveals the depth of human depravity. Bad trees bear bad fruit. Fortunately though, this story reveals true wisdom as well. Solomon exercised wisdom in solving the case. The mother exercised true wisdom in sparing her child. She became a good tree on that day. So can you – if you will submit to divine wisdom. Be sanctified by His truth and bear good fruit.
