Meditations of the Heart (Ps. 88:14)
Lord, why do You cast off my soul? Why do You hide Your face from me? (Ps 88:14)
The author of this psalm experiences something that all believers in God occasionally feel – that God is not close to them. Life in this world is not lived in the immediate presence of God. Our world is created by Him, overseen and managed by Jesus Christ. But we do not experience God with our physical senses: “We walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7).
This leads to occasional misinterpretation of earthly events. On a normal day, we have ample evidence of God’s love and care for us: food, family and friends, fellowship with God (access via prayer, contemplation of His word, etc.), health, safety and a host of other blessings.
But sometimes we experience pain, disappointment, frus-tration. In those times it is easy to let our trust slip and listen to Satan’s whisper that God has abandoned us. But there are lessons in the pain, and God has clearly demon-strated His constant love and care. Let us reject the devil’s slander of God and keep our faith focused on Him.
