Meditations of the Heart (Ps. 131:2)

Surely I have calmed and quieted my soul, Like a weaned child with his mother; Like a weaned child is my soul within me. (Ps 131:2)š›

There is a bond between a small child and his mother; she is his protector, comforter, feeder.  She is familiar.  She is safe.  A child may not understand why he feels insecure or afraid, and he doesn’t even realize all the dangers that threaten him.  But his mother’s smell, smile and loving embrace tells him that all is well in the world.

David draws on this universal human trait to describe his view of God.  With all the plots, pressures and politics  David faced as king, he said he tried to keep life simple:  “Lord, my heart is not haughty, nor my eyes lofty.  Neither do I concern myself with great matters, nor with things too profound for me” (131:1).  It was enough for David to focus on doing God’s will and trust that God would work everything else out.

Is God a calming force in your life?  Do you feel safe and secure before Him?  What a blessing is our heavenly Father in the midst of a hostile, uncertain world.
