Meditations Of The Heart (Ps. 47:2)
For the LORD Most High is awesome; He is a great King over all the earth. (Ps 47:2)
"Awesome” is an overused term. But when referring to God, it is hard to find a superlative that is appropriate. Awesome fits, for the more we learn about God the more awe He inspires in us.
The psalm points to the rule and authority of God over His creation. The whole world – the physical planet as well as the inhabitants thereof – is subject to God’s laws, power and will. However, this does not mean that all people acknowledge or submit to Him as a great King. Historically, most people have been idolatrous and hostile to God, but this in no way infringes upon His power and majesty.
Because God allows men to choose their response to Him, it often appears that evil has the upper hand. But those of faith continue to see God’s hand in the world – restraining the fullness of sin, fostering righteousness in the humble and governing events so that His will is done. What an AWESOME God, a great King over all the earth!
