Meditations Of The Heart (Ps. 84:10)

For a day in Your courts is better than a thousand. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness. (Ps 84:10)

In Milton’s Paradise Lost, Satan observed: “Better to reign in Hell, than serve in Heav’n.” Such a sentiment is in direct contrast with the psalm of the sons of Korah. Those who have a true appreciation of God – His glory and majesty, His unfathomable power, His love for and mercy toward His creatures – desire fellowship with Him in any capacity. Humility says, “Lord, just the lowliest place in heaven is all I desire; just let me be in your presence.” The glory God offers us is beyond imagination.

But Satan is crafty. He stirs our pride and inflates our self-importance. He convinces us that obedience is denial of joy, that worship is unfulfilling, that serving others is un-warranted sacrifice. He makes false promises which Milton captured so well. If you think it’s better to “reign in Hell than serve in heaven,” I would urge you to read the fine print. All Satan wants is company in the misery he has made for himself.
