Biblical Wisdom
“Oh, how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day. You, through Your commandments, make me wiser than my enemies … I understand more than the ancients, because I keep Your precepts.” (Psalm 119:97-98, 100)
“My son, if you receive my words, and treasure my commands within you, so that you incline your ear to wisdom, and apply your heart to understanding … then you will understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God. For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding; then you will understand righteousness and justice, equity and every good path.” (Proverbs 2:1-2, 5-6, 9)
These passages come to mind when thinking about our culture’s moral confusion. Our social fabric is being shredded by “experts” who cannot agree on clear, sound moral judgments. If God’s word is my guide, then here are some things I know for sure. My life will be much better, and I will be smarter than the experts, if I abide by these truths.
I know that …
1. Sexual promiscuity is prohibited and harmful (Heb 13:4).
2. Sexual deviancy, including homosexuality, fornication, pornography, etc. is sinful and damaging (Rom 13:13; 1 Cor 6:9).
3. To produce or voluntarily raise a child out of wedlock violates the family structure and will be detrimental (Gn 1:27-28; Eph 6:1-4).
4. Allowing my children to disrespect me or defy my authority promotes an ungodly attitude within them (Eph 6:4; Heb 12:9-11).
5. Being under the influence of alcohol or other “recreational” drugs is ungodly and makes me vulnerable (Gal 5:21; 1 Cor 6:10; 1 Pet 4:3; 2 Pet 1:6).
6. Using profanity, innuendo or blasphemy sinfully degrades my identity and self-worth (Jas 3:6-10; Eph 4:29; 5:4).
7. Failing to provide for my family and other dependents through laziness and lack of self-development is unacceptable to God (1 Tim 5:8).
Our society is confused about these and many other things, but if we just followed God’s teaching on them, how much would things improve?!
