Meditations Of The Heart (Ps. 133:1)
Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! (Ps. 133:1)
In every age, living in harmony with one’s fellow man is desirable. To enjoy good will, mutual appreciation, assistance in times of need – these are balm for the soul. On the contrary, discord, suspicion, jealousy and all-around ill will produce anxiety, self-doubt, frustration and other unsettling of the spirit.
So if unity is so pleasant, why are so many at odds with each other? Why are families fractured, marriages stressed, co-workers horrible to each other? Why is there so much hurt? Briefly, because of sin and selfishness. We know what is pleasant, but our immaturity of soul often causes us to take the low road and act in a base way.
Unity is a byproduct of deliberate effort. It occurs when men and women act selflessly and seek the good of others. It is produced by a maturity that absorbs occasional injury inflicted by thoughtless, flawed people and returns love. “But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection” (Col. 3:14).
