Proverbs To Live By (15:1)
A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.
Many proverbs address the subject of anger and strife, and for good reason: So much damage is done by uncontrolled emotions that spew forth in harsh words and/or acts of violence.
All of us live under pressure -- work, everyday aggravations, irritation from others, etc. If we do not keep the right perspective, our frustrations can lie just below the surface, only to erupt at the slightest provocation.
When we speak or act in anger, we can hurt deeply those who are on the receiving end of our outbursts. We may regret our words, but they will be difficult for others to erase from their memories.
While some may be fiery in natural temperament, we all must work to control our emotions and guard our tongues from speaking rashly. This begins with a godly outlook that keeps life in perspective, that seeks God's help and guidance, and that enjoys an inner peace that “surpasses all understanding” (Philip. 4:7).
