Person Of The Week: Mary

Like Judas, Mary is a subject of prophesy long before she was born (Is. 7:14). Unlike Judas, however, she is the epitome of godliness and humility. We can only wonder about her thoughts as she conceived a child by divine power, as she watched Jesus grow up, when she and Joseph lost Him temporarily, and when He began His ministry. Truly, she had a unique, ringside seat at the intersection of the divine and human natures possessed by her Son.

But Mary’s privileged perspective came with a price. As Simeon had said to her, “a sword will pierce through your own soul also” (Luke 2:35), Mary stood at the foot of the cross, the blood running from her Son’s dying body as He purchased redemption for all mankind. What a mixture of emotion that horrible event would have brought, and what joy to see Him resurrected!

But Mary is not the venerated figure that some have made her to be. She was an ordinary young woman who was honored by God in a unique way, but she offers nothing to us spiritually besides an example of a humble, obedient servant of God.
