Word Of The Week: Death
What was your initial reaction to seeing the word “death” in the title of this article? Is it a “dark” word? Does it conjure up feelings of dread and foreboding?
There is a natural revulsion to death, for it is often the occasion of pain and suffering, loss of a loved one, unhappy life changes, fear of the unknown and other unpleasantness. But for those who believe in God and know the Scriptures to be the thoughts of God, the morbid elements of death are tempered by the insight we get from His word.
While some aspects of death cannot be changed, the biggest issues have been resolved by God Himself. Jesus encourages us by His willingness to experience death, especially the horrible form of it that He endured. We know that His death was atoning -- that is, it was a sacrifice to alleviate the guilt of sin.
By His resurrection we are taught that our existence is forever, and a stark choice stands before us that will determine the conditions of that existence. If we choose properly, death is a portal into unimaginable peace and bliss.
Death does not have to be a dreaded enemy (Heb. 2:14-15). We give death its power by failing to accept God’s guidance and help.
