Word Of The Week: Crucifixion
Crucifixion is the act of impaling someone upon a post or stake for the purpose of execution. In the first century it was the preferred method of Roman crucifixion for the most heinous criminals, and the public and prolonged nature of the death served as a statement: Don’t cross Rome (pun intended).
“No word in human language has become more universally known than this word, and that because all of the history of the world since the death of Christ has been measured by the distance which separates events from it. The symbol and principal content of the Christian religion and of Christian civilization is found in this one word” (International Standard Bible Encyclopedia, via Blue Letter Bible).
It was through Jesus’ willingness to endure such a horrible death on our behalf that we receive forgiveness of sin. The cross highlights the hatred of God for sin and the love of Jesus for sinners. Jesus accepted in Himself what we deserve, and it is this grace and love that draw us to Him.
