Word Of The Week: Christ
Christ is not Jesus’ last name; it is more of a description of Him relative to the purpose of God.
It means "'anointed,' translates ... the word 'Messiah,' a term applied to the priests who were anointed with the holy oil ... In the NT the word is frequently used with the article, of the Lord Jesus, as an appellative rather than a title” (Vine’s Dictionary, p. 101). Jesus is the anointed one of God, the one God designated to die for the sins of mankind and reign on the throne of David.
Jesus Himself claimed to be the Messiah or Christ (John 4:25-26). The gospels present numerous eyewitness accounts of miracles worked by Jesus to sustain His claim (John 20:30-31). Many gain followers through personal charisma, but no one can make the claim of being the Christ of God and continue to back it up over two millennia -- unless He is telling the truth.
Such a term honoring our holy Savior should never be used as a form of profanity, as is so often the case today.
